Brisbane is Australia’s third most populous city and is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. The city lies on the Brisbane River on a low-lying floodplain between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range.
The first European settlement in Queensland was a penal colony at Redcliffe north of the Brisbane central business district, in 1824. That settlement was soon abandoned and moved to North Quay in 1825. Free settlers were permitted from 1842 and Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.
Brisbane is warmer than its larger siblings Melbourne and Sydney with a humid semi-tropical climate with an average high of 25.3C and low of 15.5C.
Brisbane has a growing live music scene, both popular and classical. Along with Beijing, Berlin, Birmingham and Marseille, Brisbane was nominated as one of the Top 5 International Music Hotspots by Billboard in 2007. There are also popular entertainment pubs and clubs within both the City and Fortitude Valley.
Brisbane has over 27 km (16.8 mi) of bicycle pathways, mostly surrounding the Brisbane river and city centre, extending to the west of the city. Brisbane also offers one of the lowest costs of living for a major Australian city and is major tourism hub with attractions such as Australia Zoo, Underwater World, and Surfer's Paradise & Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast all within close proximity.
